EPG questionnaire

The  EPG committee will soon be starting to plan next year's syllabus.  We’d like some wider input from the club to help us shape what we put together.  We also could do with a couple of members joining the committee - please consider joining us to help run the club.  The new committee will be in place after the AGM (15th April - at St Mary’s church hall).

So a few comments for context and then some questions.

Overall the club has a strong ethos - we aspire to be friendly, social, helpful, inclusive and supportive of all levels of photographic experience and to encourage the taking of great pictures.  What we put together must be consistent with this.

Meeting structure:

This year about 60% of our meeting were by zoom with the remainder face to face.  All meetings have been well attended and, without doubt, we have had some great speakers ‘over zoom’.  Some people would like to increase the number of face-to-face meetings as they are important for the health of the club (maintaining and building relationships, having off the cuff conversations from which new ideas etc emerge….).  Doing this would mean we either have to have more local speakers (including club members) or, to have more workshop sessions or, run some hybrid zoom/face to face meetings.

Competitions

Competitions are a significant part of our syllabus.  But, perhaps inevitably they can induce lively debate due to diverse views about their subjects, judging etc..  We have few entries to print competitions - but many photographers say printing a good picture is immensely satisfying and a great test.  We’d like some input to help us be clearer about:

  • ‘what makes a good competition’ and ‘what makes a ‘good portfolio of competitions’

  • How many should be have and mix between print and digital.

Outings:

We run outings throughout the year.  They are important.  They help integrate new members, help coaching (maybe we could do more of this?) and give opportunities for informal discussion.  There is more opportunity for discussions over coffee, or during the outing than in the short time available at face to face club meetings.

Trips away:

Over the past few years we’ve be organising trips to other parts of Scotland.  Generally these have worked very well.  We have also had small parties venture abroad - but generally these have been ‘personally organised’ rather than club organised.
